The figure shows the percentage of B42 males displaying courtship dominance following social interactions with a range of male types (n > 25 in all cases). B42 males were housed at age 0–24 hours with adult males of varying genotypes and conditions. Data for dominance intensity (BIs) are not presented; there were no significant differences between dominant and non-dominant males for this measure. B42 and Dijon, males that predominantly produce 7-tricosene; Tai, males that predominantly produce 7-penta-cosene; Desat, males that produce no unsaturated cuticular hydrocarbons. Flies marked ** were Desat flies carrying the cuticular profile typical of the strain marked between the asterisks, following hydrocarbon transfer between live flies. Hydrocarbon transfer took place for 24 hours at three days old (at this age, differential dominance can not be induced). HL, headless. Bars are coded according to the hydrocarbon profile of the Although males and females may face severe sexual conflicts [1], the decision over who donates and who receives sperm is fixed. This is not necessarily the case in simultaneous hermaphrodites, where each mate may insist on copulating as 'male,' 'female' or both. The resulting conflicts over gender provide an opportunity to study conflict-solving strategies. By directly manipulating mating interests in the sea slug Chelidonura hirundinina, we present the first unequivocal evidence for 'sperm trading' [2], a mating strategy where sperm donation is conditional on sperm receipt. Trading enforces reciprocity, offering a simple solution for the gender conflict. Following its original description in 1984 [2], sperm trading has been suggested to be widespread as many hermaphrodites inseminate reciprocally. But recent studies have shown that reciprocity alone does not prove sperm trading [3,4]. Showing that bidirectional sperm exchange is indeed conditional requires experimental manipulation of sex roles, which is impractical in most species studied thus far [5–7]. Hermaphroditic sea slugs of the Order Cephalaspidea are exceptional …

Inflorescence features of a new exceptional monoecious Pistacia atlantica Desf. (Anacardiaceae) population in the barbaros plain of İzmir/Turkey

Unusual gender types in some Pistacia species are considered as useful material for pistachio breeding. In this report, the inflorescence characteristics of an exceptional monoecious Pistacia atlantica Desf. tree population were presented. The gender distribution was highly complex and variable among the trees. Some of the branches bore only female or male inflorescences. Also, some branches bo...

Evolutionary Conflict: Sperm Wars, Phantom Inseminations

A new experimental study has provided the first definitive evidence for conditional punishment of 'cheats' in a sperm-trading simultaneous hermaphrodite: the sea slug Chelidonura hirundinina. This also provides a rare unequivocal example of conditional reciprocity averting a 'tragedy of the commons' in biology.

Surgical correction of urethral diverticulum in a female pseudo-hermaphrodite crossbred calf

A 40 kg crossbred calf of one month age was presented to the Institute Referral Polyclinic, with a history of dysuria, stranguria along with a fluctuant swelling in the mid-perineal region. On physical examination, a diverticulum was observed which on aspiration revealed urine. It was reported that urine outflow was from a tiny orifice at the proposed natural site of the vulva. Dissection of th...

The role of staminate flowers in the breeding system of Olea europaea (Oleaceae): an andromonoecious, wind-pollinated taxon.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Andromonoecy, as a breeding system, has generated a considerable body of theory in terms of sexual selection, but extended records comparing the performance of pollen grains from staminate versus hermaphrodite flowers are still sparse. The objective in this study was to elucidate the role of staminate flowers in the andromonoecious breeding system of olive (Olea europaea). ...

Sex-specific phenotypic selection and geographic variation in gender divergence in a gynodioecious shrub.

In sexually polymorphic plant species the extent of gender divergence in floral morphology and phenology may be influenced by gender-specific selection patterns imposed by pollinators, which may change geographically. Distribution margins are areas where changes in the pollinator fauna, and thus variation in gender divergence of floral traits, are expected. We tested for pollination-driven geog...
